Over 100 Barnsley College Construction students have helped to build the new Honeywell Grange housing estate through work experience at Miller Homes.
Miller Homes, a national construction company that has built a large number of new high quality family homes in Barnsley, has taken on 111 Construction students on two-week work placements since 2017. Students have gained first-hand experience of working on a live construction site at Honeywell Grange and gained an insight in to how a large construction business operates whilst building their real-life construction skills.
Under the guidance of Miller Homes employees the students took part in a health and safety induction, took a tour of the site, learned more about preparing the foundations for a new house and undertook practical work in joinery and bricklaying.
Construction student Sean Waine said: “My work placement helped me gain an apprenticeship with Miller Homes, I would tell other students to go for it as it does help you get a job if you show commitment and work hard.”
Nick Arnold, Site Manager at Miller Homes, added: “Work placements provides students with valuable life experience concerning site health and safety and the different building techniques when building new homes. It provides students with an opportunity to take their first steps on the career ladder and possibly an apprenticeship with Miller Homes.”
