The Story of Ventoux Told on Road Bikes at The Civic

Publicity artwork for VentouxWe’ve seen Britain go cycle crazy with the Tour De Yorkshire returning on 3 May and now there’s even a play about it. Ventoux is a restaging of the dramatic battle between Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani in the Tour de France 2000 on Mont Ventoux showing at The Civic this March.

“Not a pedestrian moment” The Independent

Ventoux is the most fearsome mountain encountered in the Tour de France, at 1,912m it has even claimed the life of one race participant. In 2000 Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani battled up this hill in what was once regarded as the greatest race in the history of cycling.

We now know that the race was potentially drug-fuelled as both Armstrong and Pantani doped during their careers. At the time both were champions in their own right – Pantani winning the Tour de France in 1998, and Armstrong winning in 1999.

When they went head to head on Mont Ventoux they crossed the line together but their careers spiralled in wildly opposite directions. Armstrong won seven consecutive Tour de France titles, denied, lied and cheated where Pantani was caught and died of a cocaine overdose alone in a hotel room.

“a devastating study” Broadway Baby

The story of Ventoux charts the parallel lives of these champions who overcame great adversity in tandem, and the mountain that cast them in opposite directions.

“The performance is a true Tour de Force” The Public Reviews
