Kier is the latest organisation to sign Barnsley’s Apprenticeship Pledge.
The leading construction, property and services company joins 48 other Barnsley based businesses by pledging its support to employing apprentices at its Birdwell depot.
Pat Mollart, General Manager at Kier in Barnsley, said: “At Kier, we are dedicated to improving the local community. Providing opportunities for young people, especially through local apprenticeships, is a key part of our company values.”
Kier employs 10 apprentices throughout the borough who are studying Plastering, Bricklaying, Plumbing, Electrical Engineering and Business Administration programmes with Barnsley College. Pat goes on to say: “We decided to sign the Apprenticeship Pledge because we are committed to Barnsley and employing Barnsley residents. The Apprenticeship programme provides us with an opportunity to meet our company goals and provide local people with employment opportunities.”
Colin Booth, Principal at Barnsley College and a key driver of the Pledge, said: “The recognition the Pledge has received from UK government is testament to the fantastic investment Barnsley businesses are making to Apprenticeships and the local economy. Every business involved is commended for their commitment to providing local opportunities to people in Barnsley. The initiative is really gaining momentum, with business owners now recommending the Pledge to their professional contacts and encouraging other organisations to show their support for the Apprenticeship programme.”
The Apprenticeship Pledge encourages businesses to work towards employing 2.5% of their workforce as apprentices. Any Barnsley based business can join the likes of S.D. Décor, Wellspring Academy Trust and Stagecoach Bus in signing the Pledge, regardless of size or sector.
