Barnsley College student relishes Michelin experience

Barnsley College Catering and Hospitality student, Beata Armacka, has spent a week on work placement at Tommy Banks’ Roots in York, a Michelin level kitchen, shadowing Head Chefs.

Beata, 21, joined the restaurant voted the 25th best in the UK by Square Meals for a week of preparing, cooking and serving. The opportunity allowed Beata to gain skills and techniques she can apply to her future employment and gave her an insight into working in a fine dining restaurant.  

Thanks to the Barnsley College Enterprise department, Beata received funding to pay for all of her travel during her placement period. The College’s Enterprise department supports students and staff, as well as individuals across the borough, to act on business ideas or enterprising activities.

Beata said: “I had the most amazing time working as part of the team at Roots. It was a fantastic opportunity to be able to experience life working for a top restaurant. The skills I have taken away from my time there will put me in a good position to find a job. I would definitely recommend work placements to other students.”

Catering and Hospitality Lecturer, James Key, added: “Beata has done both the College and the Catering department proud in achieving this amazing opportunity and gaining experience in one of the country’s best restaurants.

“The restaurant has really enjoyed her commitment and professionalism during her placement, which we are extremely pleased to hear.”
